First Road Bike

I've spent years on dirt squirters such as the XR600'S etc and have finally made the move to a roady. I had a good look around and after deciding on a cruiser style bike, I spotted the Speedmaster! From the near solid rear disc to the twin brake discs at the front, this is one nice looking bike. The blacked out engine and guards edges the America for looks, and the "drag" style bars allow someone of my height to lean forward a little. I test rode one 2 weeks ago and found that at 120 klm's per hour, about 75 mph, a fist full of front brake saw the bike settling comfortably down on the front suspension while holding a stable line. Winding uphill on a steep twisty track saw good handling and enough grunt to see me backing off a little. The sound of the bike doesn't worry me at this stage and the power is enough. I agree that the bike feels as if it would benefit from a 6th gear but as pointed out in other reviews a different sprocket should fix this. As for comfort? I picked the bike up yesterday in Townsville 500 kilometers away and hit out for home. I had heard the stories of the sore butt and other travel problems, but I did the first hour in perfect weather and had no problems. Another 1.5 hours of riding saw me sliding back on the seat a little to stretch the legs and take weight off my backside. The next 2 hours saw me get soaked in some bad weather and then I cruised home under overcast sky dripping but grinning from ear to ear. First ride, 500 kilometers in 5 hours 45 minutes and no adverse effects today. This bike looks good, handles well and promotes confidence in the rider. The only down side is the clunky gear box and some gearing noise. I am assured though that the bike will "bed" in over time. Being vertically challenged I also have to shuffle forward a little to put the sidestand down. The rating above is subjective and given my confessed lack of road riding experience probably doesn't carry much weight, but if you are in the market for a cruiser check this bike out. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Upgrades/Accessories:  Have a Summer screen on the way and will look at boards as well.
