I very much enjoyed my previous bike, a 2004 Suzuki V-Strom DL1000. It was comfortable to ride, rather quick off the line, versatile with the 3 travel bag option, and acceptably smooth at speed. The new 2006 FJR1300 provides a distinct and substantial increase in those areas and more. Passing semis on the highway requires no anticipation of an aerodynamic push to the side of the lane due to the stable tracking. Sudden stops do not give significant rise in concern for loss of traction due to the ABS capabilities. The on-the-fly adjustable windshield allows for maximizing comfort throughout the range of traveling speeds. Acceleration is topped only by bikes requiring a near horizontal riding position. Both rider and passenger comfort is on par with rides of notably greater weight and cost. Whatever heat problems that existed on previous model years seem to have been effectively corrected, with only occasional reminders of the 1300 cc heat source passing over the lower legs. Dashboard mounted headlight adjustment knobs make the 1 - to 2 - up transition markedly easier, though essentially all of that duty is accomplished by flipping the rear suspension lever from soft to hard. The only problem to date on the bike itself is the instant MPG readout, which reports no higher than 17. The average MPG readout seems accurate and responsive.
