This is a "first impression" review, since I've had this Road Star for only 4 days ("liquid silver/sapphire silver", spoke wheels, white sidewalls). I like the classic look of the bike and I had to have wire wheels.
This engine ran a bit hot and smelled of cosmoline burning off for the first 100 miles, then ran cooler as the next 200+ miles ticked off on the odometer.
It has accquired a slightly deeper exhaust note as the break in progresses, but the stock exhaust is still very quiet. Extra caution is in order because other drivers certainly can't hear you unless you're sitting beside them at a traffic stop.
This bike is fast, smooth, and feels better the longer it runs. It is a generally plush ride, though I may stiffen the rear end slightly.
I've owned Harleys, Kawasaki 4s, and Yamahas in the past. I sold my V-Star 1100 days after a 2,000 mile Four Corners trip because I was so impressed with the bike, but wanted a bigger engine.
I bought the Road Star after also looking at Indians and Victory Kingpins. It was a better physical fit stock and I was confident in the reliability of the brand because of my experience with the 1100 - I never worried about being stranded, because I never was. Rideability and comfort were also big selling points for me, since I like to take long day rides (200-300mi), and longer weekend and vacation trips.
Though I've only had it a short time, it's easily the best motorcycle I've ever owned.
