I purchased my Bayou 250 last January. I was looking at used quads and found out I could buy this one brand new for the same price. It's a great trail machine, has a lot of low end and a granny 1st gear. Lacks power at higher speeds. I added a 2000# winch, which was tricky to fit inside the front bumper. Also purchased tire chains for it to make it go in the snow. It's been extremely reliable (towed my brother's Yamaha Warrior home after it broke down last weekend). I am not easy on this machine.
Here are my likes and dislikes about it:
Likes- compact size and light weight make it easy to handle, maneuverable, and a snap to throw in the bed of a truck. Runs all day long on its less than 3 gallon tank. For a 2WD machine, gets through a lot of mud and terrain before it gets stuck, and since it's light, its easier to get out. It's pretty quiet if you keep the RPM's down. Comes with a hitch. Goes great in the snow with the tire chains for a 2WD. Starts easy and warms up fast. Oil is a snap to change.
Dislikes- lacks top end power (I expected this buying a 250) and only does around 40mph. Does not take turns well at higher speeds. Brakes need constant adjustment (but are very easy to adjust). The drum brakes get frozen up in the winter quite often. Not much suspension travel so the suspension bottoms out on a lot of big bumps and jumps. Oil filter o-ring gaskets are easy to pinch when installing and can result in oil leaks. Racks bend easily.
Overall I'm very happy with the machine and what I got for what I paid. If you're looking for speed, pass this one over. If you do a lot of winter riding in deep snow or ride on very muddy trails pass this one over for a 4x4. If you're looking for cheap thrills, you found your ride, and can't beat this for the money.
Future plans: add a plow to do my driveway.
Upgrades/Accessories: 2000 Lb. winch (a must have for serious rider)
Kawasaki accessory handlebar bag
Rack bag
4 year extended service plan
